An organizer and architect
of the American Civil Rights movement, Bayard Rustin is often left out
of Civil Rights history because he was openly gay. It is said that he spent
time “on two crosses”, dealing with marginalization as part of both Black and
LGBT communities. Rustin brought Gandhi’s peaceful
protest techniques and ideals to the Civil Rights movement and helped mold
Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence.
