#BeyGood Black History Month:
Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay's most recent film SELMA chronicles the historic 1965 voting rights campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay directed the film from her screenplay, with Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt's Oscar-winning company Plan B serving as producers.

In addition to directing one of the most talked about films of the season that was subsequently nominated for two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, five Critics Choice awards, eight NAACP Image Awards and five Independent Spirit Awards, Ava is making Black History current day.

At the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, DuVernay won the Best Director Prize for her second feature film “Middle of Nowhere,” becoming the first African-American woman to win the award. Continuing the stride, she is also the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award, and is also the first black female director to have a film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
