Access to clean water and sanitation is one of the biggest problems affecting the world's poorest countries. Girls and women specifically are particularly at risk - they lose more than 140 million hours every day to the tasks of collecting clean water for their families. In sub-Saharan Africa, this equates to 40 billion hours of time wasted each year, the value of the entire labor force of France.

This daily reality denies girls and women the opportunity to go to school, find work, and often exposes them to sexual violence. In too many places, women are excluded from decision-making around sanitation, further perpetuating the systems that keep them in poverty.
